The main motif is a window of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. The windows of this building are considered to be the most beautiful of the Renaissance, the epoch that holds a prominent position in Burckhardt's work. The text passage in the background comes from the "Weltgeschichtliche Betrachtungen". Above is a section of the Pergamon Altar (today in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin). For Burckhardt, this altar is the central expression of Greek art and culture. The detail from the frieze shows the fight of the giants against the Olympic gods. In the background, the dome of the Pantheon in Rome is visible, of which Burckhardt had a picture in his study. At the bottom left is a graphic representing Jacob Burckhardt's understanding of history. Burckhardt breaks down historical epochs by means of art changes in architecture, sculpture and painting and at the same time sets them in relation to state, religion and culture.
