Obverse symbol

Text in English and French. At the left side is a frosted maple leaf-shaped window, with the denomination below. At the centre is a portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, statesman and Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911. At the right side of the note is a see-through hologram strip with a smaller portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier at top, a depiction of the Mackenzie Tower atop the West Block of Parliament in Ottawa at bottom, and transparent text and the denomination repeated throughout. As well, the hologram strip has a partially translucent border consisting of maple leaves. At the very right side of the note is the denomination once again and the year the note was issued.

This side of the note depicts the theme of space innovation. At left is the denomination and a mirrored image of the hologram strip. At centre is an image of Canadarm2 and Dextre, part of the Mobile Servicing System on board the International Space Station (ISS). To the right of the image of Canadarm2 and Dextre is an astronaut, symbolizing Canadians who have contributed to to the space program and the research conducted aboard the ISS. The astronaut's spacesuit has a Canadian flag patch, but is intentionally without any identifying mission or rank markers. Below the astronaut is a depiction of Earth from space, based off satellite images, with the Great Lakes, Hudson Bay and the Gulf of St Lawrence visible. Throughout this side of the note are five stylized stars representing the note's denomination ($5). At the right side of the note is the reverse side of the maple leaf-shaped window, with the denomination below.
