Obverse symbol

A black and white frame with decorative shapes including the value of the banknote "5" & "FIVE". The denomination is repeated in blue underprint. In the central oval is a portrait of Mary of Teck, Queen of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Empress of India. On either side of the portrait are serial numbers printed in red. At the far right is the Department of Finance seal featuring an escutcheon from the Royal Coat of Arms of Canada.
