Obverse symbol

The obverse features a rectangular patterned frame with the date “1938” at the bottom and a two-line inscription at the top. In the upper left corner is depicted the emblem of the USSR from the 1936 design (with 11 ribbons representing the number of union republics). In the lower left corner is a large guilloché rosette displaying the numeral “1”, while similar but smaller rosettes appear in both right-hand corners. The interior area is filled with an orange background featuring a large rosette in the center in which the digit “1” is inscribed. Over this background, the denomination is boldly written in a handwritten style with smaller text below. In the lower right, just above the denomination, the series and number of the note are indicated. On the right side is an engraving depicting a miner with a jackhammer.

Reverse symbol

The reverse features a rectangle composed of numerous colored wavy lines, with the numeral “1” placed in the diagonally opposite corners. In the center, over two guilloché rosettes, an octagon is displayed bearing the inscription “ ОДИН РУБЛЬ” (“ONE RUBLE”). On its sides, as well as above and below, the denomination is repeated in the ten other principal languages of the USSR of that period—Ukrainian, Belarusian, Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Uzbek, Turkmen, Tajik, Kazakh, and Kyrgyz.
