Obverse symbol

Polychrome printing predominantly blue-green and brown. The wording of the issuing institute “BANQUE DE L’ALGIÈRE ET DE LA TUNISIE” is printed in a blue-green square in the center. The value “500” is repeated twice in the upper corners. The numbering, signatures and date of issue are printed in black. On the right on the front, a head of Bacchus, Roman god of shepherds and flocks and a ram's head at his side. In the background, we can see a vine and a bunch of grapes on the left. In the same place, article 139 of the Penal Code is printed on three lines in an orange cartridge. Overprint "CONTRE-VALEUR DE 5 NOUVEAUX FRANCS" in red color, over watermark space on the left.

The value “500” is printed in Arabic and dark brown in the upper corners. At the bottom of the note, article 139 of the Penal Code is written in Arabic as well as the other wordings which were in French on the front.
